Applied Sociology, M.A.

Degree Requirements

The M.A. in Applied Sociology consists of 30 credits. All students must complete the statistics and methods requirement, plus either the thesis option or the analytical paper option.

Statistics and Methods Requirement (9 credits)

Two required courses:

SOCY 600 - Research Methodology [3]
SOCY 604 - Statistical Analysis [3]
One other methods or statistics course from an approved listing, including:
SOCY 618 - SAS for Social Scientists [3]
SOCY 619 - Qualitative Methods in Social Research [3]
PSYC 711 - Data Analytic Procedures II [3]
ECON 611 - Advanced Econometric Analysis I [3]

Analytical Paper Option (21 credits)

18 credits of elective courses
3 credits of SOCY 711 - Analytical Paper Research

Including preparation of a research paper approved by a first and second reader

Thesis Option (21 credits)

15 credits of elective courses
6 credits of SOCY 799 - Master’s Thesis Research

Including preparation and defense of a master’s thesis under a committee of three faculty members.
