Recognized by their peers as leading experts in their fields, UMBC’s graduate faculty members are committed to the highest standards in teaching, conducting research and mentoring graduate students.
*Only Graduate Faculty may teach graduate-level courses, advise graduate students, and serve on doctoral dissertation and master’s thesis committees.
* For the purpose of forming thesis and dissertation committees; committee members who are serving as outside members and not faculty members at UMBC do not require Graduate Faculty membership.
Graduate Faculty Status for Faculty Who are No Longer Employed by UMBC
Faculty members who are serving on thesis or dissertation committees at the time their UMBC employment ends, may continue to serve on those committees and are entitled to retain their graduate faculty status for purposes of committee positions. They cannot however, continue to serve as the chair of the committee for the official paperwork although they may serve as the co-chair, and may be delegated authority to serve the duties of the chair during the defense.
Faculty members may serve on thesis or dissertation committees formed after their employment with UMBC ends. However, they will be considered to be outside members and will be required to provide CVs.
Graduate Faculty Status for Emeritus Faculty
Retired faculty members who have been awarded emeritus status, will retain their graduate faculty status and may continue to chair thesis and dissertation committees (as appropriate, for the graduate faculty status) for as long as the emeritus faculty member remains active in the department/program.
Any UMBC faculty member who has an appointment through the Provost’s office, may apply for Graduate Faculty membership.
