GWST 342 - Gender in Modern South Asia(3.00) This course examines how gender operates as an organizing force in social, political, and economic life in South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. We will start by discussing representations of South Asian women from the colonial to the post-colonial period, and then using casestudies, we will explore contemporary debates related to nationalism, family relationships, sexuality, labor and migration, development, globalization and social movements in South Asia. Students taking this course will gain an understanding of the complex histories of the region, the relationship between colonialism, nationalism, postcolonial politics, identity and contemporary gender issues. Recommended Course Preparation: GWST 100 or ASIA 100
