History of the German states from the French Revolution through national unification, the Bismarckian era and the Wilhelminian era up until the outbreak of World War I. Emphasis is on the struggles between nationalism, conservatism, liberalism and social democracy in the new German empire. Includes a cultural, social and political approach.
