This course will introduce students to the major trends and significant events in the history of the modern Middle East, with particular attention to themes of colonialism, nationalism, sectarianism, the impact of oil on the region, Western ambitions, and the rise of political Islam(s). We will also use film and literature to explore the complexity of life on the ground, as ordinary people and leaders alike struggle with their changing circumstances.
