MATH 432 - History of Mathematics(3.00) An examination of the conceptual development of mathematics and the roles played by the people central to its development. Key periods of focus will be the Greco-Roman classical era, the development of mathematics from the Renaissance through the birth of the calculus, the rise of mathematical rigor and abstraction in the 18th and 19th centuries (e.g., number and quantity, algebra, geometry, discrete mathematics, statistics and probability, and calculus), and the continuing evolution of mathematics and its impact on modern society in the 20th century. Ancilliary topics such as ethno-mathematics and humanistic-mathematics may be addressed. Note: This course does not qualify as an upper division mathematics/statistics elective for majors or minors, but it does qualify as a supplementary elective.
