This course examines modern nation-building and self-government in a traditional society. Other topics discussed include: the secular state; political parties, economic development, the transformation of caste, the rise of revolutionary movements and of ethnic and religious nationalism, the development of nuclear weapons, and the continuing conflict with Pakistan. Recommended Preparation: Junior standing or POLI 100 or POLI 270.
