MLL 316 - Japanese Language in Society (3)

In this course, students learn how the Japanese language is used and how it relates to the culture in society by analyzing characteristics of the language, its use in society, and similarities and differences in usage between English and Japanese. Course topics include language and its reflection in culture, nonverbal communication/gesture, the Japanese writing system, discriminatory language, onomatopoeia, language and technology, and intercultural communication. Because this course is based on class/small group discussions, students are required to prepare the reading materials for each class. Knowledge of Japanese is not required. Recommended Preparation: ASIA 100 or any 100- or 200-level Culture (GEP) course.
