GES 673 - Processing Geographic Data

Credits: [3]
Description: “In this course, students will learn to process geographic data to create professionally prepared data sets by systematically using several tools to assemble, clean, and manipulate existing data for use in analysis. The primary objectives of this course are three-fold. First, students will learn the mechanics of several geo-processing tools so they can (i) describe how the tools work, (ii) determine which tools are the most appropriate for manipulating or creating data in specific ways, and (iii) conceptualize the final state of the data after processing. Second, students will develop skills in selecting and logically sequencing a set of geo-processing tools to develop a methodological process that (i) modifies data to create a standard data set for use by a broad range of analysts, and (ii) creates new data for analytical use by others or in their own work. Third, students will learn how to document a geo-processing method for the purpose of (i) allowing others to replicate the method and (ii) provide transparency for data quality assessment. To support the learning of these objectives, several GIS operation theories will be presented so that students can identify how a GIS operates, stores, manipulates, and outputs geographic data”
