AMST 403 - Ethnography in America (3)


This course is an introduction to the principles, methods, and uses of ethnography, as well as key concepts and ethical issues concerning ethnographic methods of inquiry. Drawing on theory from anthropology and sociology, the course will examine types of ethnographic literature, the ethnographic voice, and concepts of objectivity and subjectivity in analysis and description. Emphasis will be placed on the ethnographic techniques of participant observation, interviewing and documentation. Additionally, the course will examine and engage students in the processes of interpreting and analyzing qualitative data. Students will complete a research practice project that includes writing an ethnographic text. Recommended Preparation: Six credits in American Studies courses, three at the upper level.
