ART 342 - Critical Concepts in Film and Photography (3) Photography and film are ubiquitous. As such, it can be hard to extricate them from our cultural and historical context to understand better how they ‘picture’ things and how the camera has co-created our modern sense of what it means to ‘see’ in the first place. The camera has impacted everything in terms of visualization in our culture; how we see and understand science, technology, criminology, sociology, history, ethnography, sexuality, beauty, desire, and even art itself. The readings for the course introduce students to some important critics who demonstrate how issues of class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and economic, historical, and geopolitical relations of power are inseparable from the historical study of these mediums.
