ANTH 234 - Focused Cultural Study: South America (3) This course explores the historical, economic, and social processes that shape present day life in South America. The class will draw attention to the ways that religion; mestizaje, indigeneity and blackness; citizenship; the environment; security; and the arts have come to take on their current forms. Course materials explore the impacts of colonialism, drawing attention to how the region’s pre-Colombian history, the European drive for conquest, and eventual independence laid the foundations for present day formations of race, gender, and religion. The course also examines how urbanization and neoliberalization have generated social conflict as everyday life has been reoriented to fit the needs of global capital. Lastly the course explores how communities are making calls for alternative and decolonial models of development. (Spring)
