EDHS 624 - Emergency Management for Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations

Description: This course is designed to provide students with disaster management capabilities that will have applicability in their current or future employment in the hospital or healthcare arena. Students will learn to develop a management framework within the current disaster management paradigm (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery) as it pertains to the healthcare environment including to perform a Hazard Vulnerability Analysis, to implement an emergency operations plan, to address the six critical areas of emergency response (communication, resources and assets, safety and security, staff responsibilities, utilities management, and patient clinical and support activities), to plan testing and evaluation activities, and to recover after an incident. Topics that will be covered include principles of emergency management for hospitals and healthcare facilities, workforce issues in healthcare emergency management, healthcare operations in disasters and public health emergencies, clinical considerations for critical disaster situations, addressing vulnerable populations in healthcare emergency management and legal and policy considerations in healthcare emergency management, in accordance with the 2016 CMS Emergency Preparedness Rule.
