Program Description
The interdisciplinary doctoral program in Language, Literacy, and Culture investigates the concepts and processes of language, literacy, and culture in relationship to social, cultural, linguistic, historical, technological, and ideological formations. This interdisciplinary program draws upon the departments of Africana Studies; American Studies; Education; English; Gender, Women’s + Sexuality Studies; History; Media and Communication Studies; Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication; and Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health at UMBC.
LLC students are required to take 12 credit hours of introductory coursework which provides an interdisciplinary foundation to further study (LLC 700, LLC 701, LLC 744, and LLC 745). They then take a minimum of 21 credit hours to develop the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of their desired research topic. Those credit hours can be through LLC or other relevant graduate-level course offerings.
Program Admission Requirements
Admission to the LLC doctoral program is highly competitive. At a minimum all applicants must have a master’s degree and meet all of the admissions requirements as set forth by the Graduate School. In addition, applicants must submit an academic writing sample with their application.
All application documents should be sent directly to the Graduate School, and not to the LLC program. Please note that the LLC Doctoral Program matriculates new students in fall semesters only. The program deadline for receipt of all application materials is January 15 of the calendar year in which the student intends to enroll.
Financial Assistance
A limited number of graduate assistantships are available through the program. Visit the UMBC Financial Aid website for more information: http://www.umbc.edu/financialaid
