Program Description

M.P.S.: Community Leadership

The Community Leadership Master’s in Professional Studies includes core courses designed to help each student develop the self-understanding, academic knowledge, practical skills, and professional relationships needed to excel as a community leader. In addition to completing the core courses, students choose elective courses that deepen their expertise in a specific area.  

The Graduate Program Director will work with each student to create a coherent pathway through the program. Students can choose their elective courses from UMBC graduate offerings in Sociology, Public Policy, Social Entrepreneurship, American Studies, Geography and Environmental Systems, Modern Languages Linguistics & Intercultural Communication, and Community Psychology.

P.B.C.: Community Leadership

The Post Baccalaureate Certificate requires successful completion of four courses, drawn from the same core courses required of Master’s of Professional Studies (MPS) students.  The certificate helps students develop the self-understanding, academic knowledge, practical skills, and professional relationships needed to excel as a community leader.  If students want to continue their studies and deepen their expertise in community leadership, they can apply certificate course credits to the MPS in Community Leadership. 

Program Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree

GRE scores are not required for admission

Applicants should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Applicants should have experience working or volunteering in community-oriented organizations.

Financial Assistance

Community Leadership is an applied, professional degree. Students should review the program cost page,  for any opportunities and a link to the Financial Aid Department. Students are also eligible to apply for non-research based graduate assistantships offered through other academic departments.
