Department of Army Military Science/Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)
The Army Reserve Officers Training Corps is an elective course of study that allows full-time college students at UMBC the opportunity to earn a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, Army Reserve or National Guard while pursuing a regular college degree. The UMBC Army ROTC program is partnered closely with its parent program organization, the Johns Hopkins Army ROTC Blue Jay Battalion, conducting classes and training on both UMBC and JHU campuses. Together, UMBC and Johns Hopkins produce leaders and help students achieve their future goals.
The UMBC Army ROTC Experience and Team
When students become a part of Army ROTC, they’re not just working toward a diploma, they are members of the Team. Being a part of the UMBC Army ROTC and Blue Jay Battalion means students will be in the company of a diverse group of individuals with broad interests and talents. Cadets include presidents of their student governments, captains of their varsity sports teams, club presidents, or members of the National Honor Society. They all have one thing in common: a commitment to learn to lead and excel at everything they do. ROTC cadets are students first. Cadets have college schedules and academic majors like their fellow students, but they also take classroom and field courses that challenge and excite them and make their college experience even better.
Eligibility for Participation in Army ROTC
ROTC basic classes are open to all students and focus on developing leadership skills. Army ROTC is an elective curriculum taken along with required college classes. It is not a minor, but it gives cadets the tools, training, and experiences that will help them succeed in any competitive environment. Prospective cadets may join Army ROTC as first year, sophomore, junior, or graduate students; when cadets join determines how many classes they need to take to successfully graduate from the program. Because ROTC is an elective, cadets can enroll in Army ROTC during their first two years of college without any service commitment. ROTC cadets typically take two courses per semester (one class and one lab) and conduct physical training. Students can submit questions to ROTC cadre members through the Johns Hopkins Army ROTC contact link.
Opportunities with Army ROTC
UMBC Army ROTC offers many advantages. Through ROTC cadets can:
- Get 100% of college tuition paid for up front
- Get a monthly tax exempt stipend
- Gain experience they can’t find anywhere else
- Gain the respect of peers and future employers
- Train to become a leader and manager
Cadets enhance their confidence, problem solving ability, and leadership skills. Army ROTC produce leaders of character, presence, and intellect through weekly leadership laboratories, classroom instruction with experienced Army leaders, an extensive physical fitness regimen, immersion in military lifestyle and customs, and hands-on practice performing important Army skills. Army ROTC also offers special extracurricular activities, unique paid internships, adventures, and military training available nowhere else. More information is available at the Johns Hopkins Army ROTC website.
