International Politics Minor

This minor is designed for students in any major who want to concentrate in the study of international politics. In addition to 18 credits of relevant courses in political science, students are required to acquire a significant language capability.  The concentration provides a good foundation for further study and careers in international affairs (e.g., international business, intelligence analysis, U.S. State Department, international development, international organizations, international private voluntary organizations, etc.).

Students who elect to pursue this minor must complete two required courses (6 creidts): POLI 260–Comparative Politics, and POLI 280 or 281–International Relations.  In addtion, students must complete four elective courses (12 credits) in comparative politics or international relations (POLI courses in the 360-399 and 460-499 ranges).  At least one of the four eclective courses must be a 400-level POLI course.  Students must also complete a language requiement: courses or proficiency up through the 302 -level  in one language other than the student’s native language. (International  students may have this language requiement waived.)                                                                                        

Students majoring in political science may count no more than 3 courses from the POLI major toward this minor.                      

Students minoring in international politics may complete one additional minor offered by the Political Science Department.

Students pursuing minors in two Political Science programs  may count up to three courses toward the completion of both minors.

Required Courses (6 credits)


Language Requirements


Courses or proficiency through the 302 level in one language other than the student’s native language.

Electives (12 credits)


Students must take four additional POLI courses (12 credits) in comparative politics or international relations.  These courses are those in the POLI course number ranges 360-399 and 460-499. At least one of the four elective courses must be a 400-level course.

Note:


No grade lower than a “C” in any course may count toward any minor.

Total: 18 Credits, plus a language
