History, B.A.


The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History consists of 39 credits distributed as follows:

Core Lower-Level Courses (9 credits)


Core Lower-Level Courses must be numbered below 300 and distributed in such a way that each student completes a mininum of 3 credits in U.S. History and a minimum of 3 credits in European, Asian, Latin American or African History.

Elective Courses (24 credits)


Electives must be distributed in such a way that each student has a minimum of 9 credits in U.S. history and a minimum of 12 credits in European, Asian, Latin American or African history.

Electives must come from History courses numbered 300 and above, with at least 9 of the 24 elective credits in courses numbered 400 and above.

No grade lower than “C” in any course will be counted toward the major with the exception of HIST 391  (a Pass/Fail course). Students may apply up to 3 credits earned in HIST 391  as elective credits for the history major.

The CEEB Advanced Placement Examination allows students achieving a minimum score to earn credit toward the university’s graduation and general education requirements. Students may also be exempted for up to 6 credits of lower-level courses required for the history major, provided they receive scores of 4 or 5 on an AP examination and provided that no more than 3 credits may come for each AP Examination.
