MLLI Minor in Japanese Language and Culture

A minor in Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication (MLLI) allows students to develop prof ciency in a foreign language, to learn about the nature of language and to become familiar with the societies in whi ch different languages are spoken. A minor in MLLI will assist students in developing communication skills and in understanding the complexities of an increasingly interdependent, multilingual and multicultural world. It will enrich students’ learning experience and enhance their career potential.

The MLLI minor in Japanese Language and Culture requires a total of 18 credits:

3 credits:

one MLL core course

MLL 190 - The World of Language: Structural and Biological Aspects (3.00)
MLL 191 - The World of Language: Cultural and Social Aspects (3.00)
MLL 230 - World Language Communities (3.00)
Note: MLL/LING 230 must be taken at UMBC.
MLL 301 - Textual Analysis: Words, Images, Music (3.00)
Note: MLL 301 must be taken at UMBC.

6 credits:

two upper level Japanese language courses

JPNS 301 - Advanced Japanese I (3.00)
JPNS 302 - Advanced Japanese II (3.00)

9 credits:

JPNS or MLL electives (3 credits must be JPNS)

JPNS 309 - Business Japanese (3.00)
JPNS 319 - Japanese Translation (3.00)
MLL 317 - Images of Society in Contemporary Japanese Films (3.00)
MLL 327 - Modern Japanese Culture (3.00)
MLL 333 - Japanese Food Culture (3.00)
Any MLL topics course (or course in another discipline) relevant to Japanese language and culture, with the approval of the MLLI department.

Note:

All students desiring to complete a minor in the MLLI Department must have a designated minor advisor and select courses with the approval of that advisor. All courses submitted by a student in fulfillment of the requirement for the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.
