Modern Languages and Linguistics, One-Language Concentration, B.A.

Offered by Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication .

All courses submitted by a student in fulfillment of the requirements for the major must be completed with a grade of C or higher. 

MLLI One-Language Concentration (39-42 credits)


Students may choose one of four languages (French, German, Russian, or Spanish) within the One-Language concentration:

French Interconnections With the World (42 credits)


9 credits:


MLL core courses

6 credits:


  • elective FREN courses at the 300 or 400 level

6 credits:


  • elective FREN courses at the 400-level

Note:


Up to 15 transfer credits may be applied to the major requirements, but at least two 400-level FREN courses must be taken at UMBC. Credit by exam for FREN 301  and FREN 302   counts towards the 15 transfer credits allowed.

German (40 credits)


Track A: Cultural Studies concentration - Germany then and now


9 credits:

MLL core courses

6 credits:

  • elective GERM courses at the 300 and 400 level.  One of these two courses can be a MLL course or from a discipline outside of MLLI. Any course from the Advanced Language Study sequence is also permissible. Recommended: GERM 420  , GERM 421 , or MLL 332  

Track B: Advanced language study - Intercultural and Professional Communication and Globalization


9 credits:

MLL core courses

6 credits:

  • elective GERM courses at the 300 and 400 level.  One of these courses can be a MLL course. Any course from the cultural studies track is also permissible. Recommended: GERM 309 , GERM 319 , GERM 481 , MLL 305 .

Russian (43 credits)


9 credits:


MLL core courses

9 credits:


  • elective RUSS courses at the 300 or 400 level

Spanish (43 credits)


9 credits:


MLL core courses

6 credits:


  • elective SPAN courses at the 300 or 400 level.

Note:


It is highly recommended that SPAN 308  be taken before or concurrently with SPAN 312 , and SPAN 307  before or concurrently with SPAN 311 .

SPAN 401  is the capstone course for the major, and must be taken at UMBC.

SPAN 421  and SPAN 472   may be repeated for credit as topics change.  

400-level courses routinely require a term paper or equivalent written assignment.
