Historical Studies, M.A.

The Master of Arts program in Historical Studies program is characterized by a core emphasis on academic training in historiographical methods and theory; current conceptual tools and techniques for organizing historical evidence; and primary research in a large number of subject/area specialties. A minimum of 30 credits is required to graduate.

HIST 701 - The Study of History [3]
HIST 702 - The Practice of History [3]
Elective Courses [18 credits]

(Students may take up to 9 credits at the 600 level and at least 9 credits at the 700 level.)
HIST 799 - Master’s Thesis Research [2-9] A minimum of 6 credits are required.

Public History Track

The M.A. in Historical Studies Program includes the option of a Public History track which offers an opportunity to explore the practice and theory of “public history” in fields such as archival management, historical editing, construction and administration of public history sites, the writing of institutional or policy history, and the use of electronic media techniques in exhibits and Internet sites. A minimum of 30 credits is required to graduate.

The specific requirements for the Public history track are as follows:

HIST 701 - The Study of History [3]
HIST 702 - The Practice of History [3]
HIST 705 - Introduction to Public History [3]
HIST 790 - Internship in Historical Studies [3]
(usually with one of the many historical institutions in the area)

Elective Courses [12 credits]
HIST 799 - Master’s Thesis Research [2-9] A minimum of 6 credits are required.
