The secondary education program provides learning experiences to prepare students to earn teaching certification for grades 7-12. Students seeking secondary teacher certification complete the requirements of selected majors and professional education courses. In cooperation with other departments, specific tracks have been developed to ensure that teacher candidates’ content background is rigorous and current. Students seeking secondary education certification have a major adviser and an education adviser. Secondary certification programs include:

Teacher Certification and Licensure
Education offers initial teacher certification programs that meet the standards set by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Teacher certification programs are completed in conjunction with undergraduate majors and may require coursework in the major field beyond the major requirements. Teacher candidates at UMBC who complete a certification program and pass the tests and performance assessments outlined by MSDE are recommended to Maryland State Department of Education for licensure by the UMBC Education Department.
