Offered by Political Science.
Security challenges as diverse as nuclear proliferation, transnational and domestic terrorism, great-power rivalries, the climate crisis, human trafficking, and information warfare are evolving in dangerous and unpredictable ways. Security studies is the academic sub-discipline focusing on these and many other issues in international, national, homeland, cyber, and human security.
As the range of security threats has expanded, there has been a corresponding increase in hiring by governmental, private, and not-for-profit organizations. The Baltimore-Washington region is a national hub for jobs in security policy and analysis, with plentiful opportunities for graduates who are well-versed in security affairs. The certificate enables undergraduates in the social sciences, humanities, and STEM fields to graduate with a rigorous certification of their expertise in security studies that complements their major(s).
