University Requirements

Completion of Minimum University Requirements for an Undergraduate Baccalaureate Degree .

• Minimum 120 credits and minimum GPA of 2.0
• Completion of 45 upper-level credits, residence requirement, Writing Intensive requirement, and General Education requirement

Major Requirements

• Minimum 43 credits
• Minimum grade of ‘C’ in courses applied to the major
• Minimum 21 credits in economics completed in residence at UMBC
• Students may complete a maximum of one major or minor from Economics  
• ECON 600 may not be used towards the Economics, B.A.

Students preparing for graduate study in economics, particularly at the doctoral level, should complete courses that provide the necessary mathematical background. These include:

• ECON 490 - Analytic Methods in Economics (3)
• MATH 221 - Introduction to Linear Algebra (3)
• MATH 225 - Introduction to Differential Equations (3)
• MATH 251 - Multivariable Calculus (4)
• MATH 301 - Introduction to Mathematical Analysis I (4)
• MATH 302 - Introduction to Mathematical Analysis II (3)
• STAT 453 - Introduction to Mathematical Statistics (3)

Preparing for a Career in Business

Students interested in pursuing a career in business should consider completing one of the certificates offered by Information Systems  in addition to their major requirements.

Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Programs

Qualified students may apply to an accelerated program, which allows them to share courses between a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Students take graduate courses as undergraduate students and later apply those courses to master’s degrees. An undergraduate may apply to participate in an accelerated program even if the desired graduate program is in a department other than the one in which the student is majoring.
