Degree Requirements

Eight courses of three or more credits each is required, and no more than two of the eight may be seminar courses.

Course Work

• The course work will include a two-semester course in biochemistry

• CHEM 437 - Comprehensive Biochemistry I
• CHEM 638 - Comprehensive Biochemistry II

• One course based on the principles of genetic analysis

• BIOL 634 - Microbial Molecular Genetics

• BIOL 614 - Eukaryotic Genetics and Molecular Biology

• One course in prokaryotic molecular biology

• BIOL 611 - Bacterial Physiology

• BIOL 612 - Microbial Systems and Synthetic Biology

• One course in eukaryotic molecular biology

Additional Requirements

• Three (3) research rotations on a short research project lasting 10-12 weeks under the supervision of a faculty member in the program
• Two semesters as a teaching assistant
• Most important, the student will complete original research under the direction of their faculty mentor and overseen by a committee knowledgeable in the student’s area of specializationon
