Literature & Culture Minor

Offered by English . The Literature & Culture Minor is appropriate for students of any major who are interested in learning to read, interpret, and write about imaginative works across genres and media forms. Students study literature and other cultural expressions from antiquity to the present. They learn to interpret these works within historical, generic, theoretical, and material contexts by honing skills in scholarly research and exploring resources such as digital archives. Equipped with proficiency in critical reading and thinking, interpretive writing and oral expression, Literature & Culture minors are prepared to enter a range of careers including professional and creative writing and editing, education, library science, and law. 

Minor Requirements


  • Minimum of 21 credits
  • Minimum grade of ‘C’ in courses applied to the minor
  • Up to 6 credits from the minor may be counted as part of the English, B.A. 

Course Requirements


Elective Requirement (15 credits)


Complete 15 elective credits, including 3 credits which may be at the 200-level, 6 credits which must be at the 300-level, 3 credits which must be at the 400-level and an additional 3 credits from an upper-level course.

Additional Elective Course


Complete one additional upper-level course from the following. Students intending to repeat a course may count the course for credit if it is being offered under a different topic.
