MLLI Minor in Applied Linguistics

A minor in Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication (MLLI) allows students to develop prof ciency in a foreign language, to learn about the nature of language and to become familiar with the societies in whi ch different languages are spoken. A minor in MLLI will assist students in developing communication skills and in understanding the complexities of an increasingly interdependent, multilingual and multicultural world. It will enrich students’ learning experience and enhance their career potential.

The MLLI minor in Applied Linguistics requires a total of 21 credits:

3 credits:

one MLL core course

MLL 190 - The World of Language: Structural and Biological Aspects (3.00)
MLL 191 - The World of Language: Cultural and Social Aspects (3.00)
MLL 230 - World Language Communities (3.00)
Note: MLL/LING 230 must be taken at UMBC.
MLL 301 - Textual Analysis: Words, Images, Music (3.00)
Note: MLL 301 must be taken at UMBC.

12 credits:

LING core courses

LING 210 - Introduction to Language Structures (3.00)
LING 290 - Introduction to Applied Linguistics (3.00)
LING 310 - Phonology and Morphology (3.00)
LING 320 - Syntax (3.00)

6 credits:

electives, chosen from other LING courses at the 300 and 400 level

Note:

A cognate course in another discipline (e.g., ANTH 402 , MLL 413 PHIL 455 , PSYC 316 , ENGL 490 ) or a language-specific linguistics course (e.g. FREN/GERM/SPAN/RUSS 331, 332, 438) may substitute for one of the elective LING courses with the written approval of a designated LING major advisor.

Note:

All students desiring to complete a minor in the MLLI Department must have a designated minor advisor and select courses with the approval of that advisor. All courses submitted by a student in fulfillment of the requirement for the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Minor through study abroad. Students at the appropriate level may complete up to 15 credits of a minor in Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication through a semester of study abroad.
