University Requirements


Completion of Minimum University Requirements for an Undergraduate Baccalaureate Degree .

  • Minimum 120 credits and minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Completion of 45 upper-level credits, residence requirement, Writing Intensive requirement, and General Education requirement

Course Requirements


Modern Languages and Linguistics Core (9 credits)


Complete the following, including MLL 230  and MLL 301  in residence at UMBC. MLL 191  is recommended but not required for most concentrations.

Concentrations (39-43 credits)


Complete one of the following concentrations:

Applied Linguistics


The Applied Linguistics concentration consists of 39 credits, which includes the Modern Languages and Linguistics Core.

Language and Literary Studies


The Language and Literary Studies concentration consists of 39 credits, which includes the Modern Languages and Linguistics Core. Students choose courses in consultation with a department advisor.

Language and Literary Studies Core

Complete the following:

Upper-Level Courses

Complete 12 credits from upper-level courses in one modern language other than English, e.g., Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Spanish.

Language and Literary Studies Electives

Complete 15 credits from LING or language courses, or other courses as approved, including a minimum of 9 upper-level credits.

French Interconnections with the World


The French concentration consists of 42 credits, which includes the Modern Languages and Linguistics Core.

Experiential Learning

Complete the following:

French Electives

Complete 12 credits in upper-level French courses, including a minimum of 6 credits at the 400 level.

German


The German concentration consists of 40 credits, which includes the Modern Languages and Linguistics Core. Students may select a track in cultural studies or advanced language studies.

Track

Complete one of the following options:

German Electives

Complete 6 credits from upper-level GERM courses or other approved courses, including a maximum of one course from MLL or a discipline outside of MLLI.

Russian


The Russian concentration consists of 40 credits, which includes the Modern Languages and Linguistics Core.

Complete 3 credits from the following:

Complete the following:

Russian Electives

Complete 9 credits from upper-level RUSS courses, including a maximum of 3 credits from MLL 360 .

Spanish


The Spanish concentration consists of 43 credits, which includes the Modern Languages and Linguistics Core.

Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Programs


Qualified students may apply to an accelerated program, which allows them to share courses between a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Students take graduate courses as undergraduate students and later apply those courses to master’s degrees. An undergraduate may apply to participate in an accelerated program even if the desired graduate program is in a department other than the one in which the student is majoring.
