It examines the perception of African Americans as criminals; the rhetoric of race; American political and criminal justice history; and how they have provided context for contemporary problems faced by African Americans with the criminal justice system in terms of mass incarceration and police misconduct. Baltimore and New York City are used as case studies for these problems. Recommended Preparation: AFST 100 and a lower level SS course (with at least a ‘C’ grade).
