POLI 387 - The Basics of Political Economy(3.00) In a world of scarcity, societies use both political and economic means to determine ‘who gets what, where, when, why, and how.’ The political-economic ‘mix’ employed, reflects each society’s basic values and beliefs about what constitutes ‘the good society.’ In this course, we will examine concepts, institutions, and instruments associated with the domains of politics (e.g., power/governance) and economics (e.g., exchange/ markets). We will consider their relative strengths and weaknesses as these relate to motivating behavior and organizing collective activity in order to address the great social challenges of our day. Topical case studies will vary from semester to semester, but case study topics are likely to include climate change, affordable health care, entitlements, governing/regulating the Internet.
