This course explores the African American struggle for full citizenship rights in the United States during the middle years of the twentieth century. It will focus on the individuals and organizations that used litigation, boycott, and nonviolent civil disobedience to desegregate America society during the period 1954 to 1968, when they achieved their greatest legislative and judicial victories. This class will also explore alternative strategies available to African Americans during this period,why nonviolence and desegregation became dominant, and how/why they were challenged as the 1960s came to a close. Recommended Preparation HIST 101 or HIST 102
