HIST 469 - Masculinity and Femininity in the Middle Ages(3.00) This course considers how medieval society defined femininity and masculinity, appropriate male and female behavior, and men and women¿s bodies. Close study of primary and secondary sources will help answer these questions: What did it mean to be masculine/feminine within medieval culture? Who created these definitions? How were the definitions challenged? What role does sexual behavior play in these definitions? How do other categories, like economic class, religion, and ethnicity complicate ideas about gender? Recommended Preparation HIST 201 and HIST 362 or HIST 366 or GWST 100 or GWST 210
